I knitted these socks a couple of months ago. I used one striped yarn and one in solid colour (red). This is because sometimes when I knit man sized socks if run out of yarn before I am finished. I have started weighing the sock yarn that I have bought and found that it is not uncommon that they contain less than the stated 100 grams. So to avoid having to buy extra yarn I sometimes use two colours instead. it is also a great way to use leftovers from other sock projects.

Larshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08799714957292795220noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8676730994899731442.post-3396199903518824882017-03-19T08:14:00.000-07:002017-03-19T08:14:03.527-07:00Socks - finally finished

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I finally finished these socks! Man´s size. Yarn used is 105 grams of Drops Fabel, and needles 2,50 mm.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I used the Old Norwegian Cast-On ("dubbel-korsuppläggning" in Swedish) and a K1, P1 ribbing. After that I changed to a Seeded Rib (4 stitches repeat) for the all-over pattern.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The heel-flap stitches are a "Reversed Slip 1, Knit 1" pattern.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Finally a toe with decreases at the end of each of the four needles. In Swedish it is called "Strålintagning". I have never tried this before, but it is said to give a good toe both with thin and thick yarn.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I like the retro<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">-feel of these socks.Larshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08799714957292795220noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8676730994899731442.post-55013219533461059722017-01-27T12:01:00.000-08:002017-01-27T12:01:37.041-08:00Hat in twined knitting - hand spun yarn

I just finished this hat in twined knitting. The yarn is some of my first hand-spun, spun years ago (2011). The red yarn is 50/50 Spelsau (grey) from Norway and Leicester (white). The fleece was grey and white when I spun it and I later dyed the yarn red. The yellow yarn was spun by mixing some dyed fleece that I was given, origin unknown. 210 stitches on needles 2,50 mm.

These are twined knitted mittens using the simplest way of patterning: two colours making stripes, and making checkers by being reversed every second row.

The main part of the mitten is striped. I used checkers on the cuff ...

and on the increases for the thumb. The increases are made on both side of the thumb gore every second row.

The cast-on is one that I have learned from Karin Kahnlund. I repeated the principle for the cast-on effect just before I started the increases for the thumb - to mark the end of the cuff.

The yarn used is spun at Wålstedts. The fleece used is from the breed Värmlandsfår - natural colours, except for the yellow that I dyed.Larshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08799714957292795220noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8676730994899731442.post-9572246578345633652017-01-06T00:42:00.000-08:002017-01-06T00:42:04.837-08:00When mending holes isn't enough ....

These holes just weren't worth mending, they were to big and the yarn was of a really bad quality (don't buy yarn without information about what kind of fibres it is made of).

But since I have been told not to waste yarn I did as my mother often did.

I cut off the part with the useless yarn and frogged the remaining material back until I reached the point where I wanted to start the new foot.

I picked up stitches and used a yarn of better quality for the foot.

I also checked with myproject book regarding needle size, amount of stitches and other particulars regarding the sock.

After some knitting I had a pair of socks almost as good as new.Larshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08799714957292795220noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8676730994899731442.post-40468625067812183112016-12-23T00:15:00.000-08:002016-12-23T00:15:37.648-08:00morbror_lars at Instagram

I have been nalbinding and this is the result - a cowl. I used some old 2-ply wool yarn and bound a fairly loose fabric in the shape of a tube. Circumference 80 cm (about 32 inches) and 40 cm in length (about 16 inches). A total of 140 grams of yarn was used.
After washing and a light fulling the finished cowl measures 75 cm (30 inches) in circumference and 37 cm (about 15 inches) in lenght. I used the Brodén stitch.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">kragar, sprund, ärmar

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">knapphål och knapphålsslåar

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">fickor

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The above post is a
presentation of <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">"STICKA - Egna modeller och fler detaljer" (a rough translation would be "KNITTING - Your own models and more details"), the second book written by Ulla Engquist. This book deals with different yarns and fibres, different kinds of collars, button holes, sleeves etc. There are also instructions on how ta make a sweater based on your own measurements. I think this is as good and as useful as her first book "<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">STICKA - Detaljer som gör skillnad" (a rough translation would be "KNITTING - Details that make a difference"). That book, we were told at the book release this autumn, will be published in the USA in 2017.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">"Tvi̕bandađir vettlingar" by Kristinu Jonsdottur Schmidhauser was published by Heimilisiđnađarfělag Íslands, 1981. When I saw this title the first time I thought it was about twined knitting, due to that the word "Tvi̕bandađir" resembled "tveband", the Norwegian word for twined knitting. Both words refer to knitting with two yarns, but in different ways. I soon discovered that the book was about Icelandic patterned mittens.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Many mittens in this book have a strong resemblance with mittens from northern Europe. We know that there was a lot of contact between the North Atlantic countries (in the form of commerce) and that through these contacts many things, including patterns, have spread.<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">There are also mittens with patterns that I think are not as common. Very interesting. The book is in Icelandic, but the mittens are presented with both photos and charts.
I have knitted small socks for a small boy that soon will celebrate his first birthday.
The yarn is Fabel sock yarn, knitted on 2,50 mm. I was almost successful in getting matching stripes. Close enough. 30 grams of yarn was used in these socks.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">These are grey socks kitted in thin sock yarn Fabel on needles size 2,50 mm. I searched the internet for a nice stitch pattern and finally found this that I liked because it gave me a retro-feel.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">They are knitted on a circular needle using the magic-loop technique. This is not my favourite method, since I prefer knitting socks with five needles, but I have decided to knit some socks in this way. I think that it could be useful if I want to bring some sock-knitting when travelling since it prevents dropping needles.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I added one strand of yarn and knitted the heel in twined knitting to get a stronger fabric. If you know how to do twined knitting I can recommend this.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">For those of you <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">who like the stitch pattern I have charted it.
My mother taught me how to knit when I was about six years old. First garter stitch scarves, but quite soon after that socks on five double-pointed needles. In the beginning I did not master the heel and the toe decreases (of course) but I managed the cuff, leg and foot.

Since then most of the socks I knit is knitted the way she taught me. Teaching somebody to knit is a great gift. Knitting has given me a lot of joy.

My mother will be 88 in December, and she still knits. She finished these socks last week. Finally! Ulla Berglund Brasch - "Folklig virkning Nås socken Dalarna" (in Swedish only) is a book on the tapestry crochet tradition from Nås, Dalecarlia. This kind of crochet has been done since the mid 1800´s when the first pattern books for crochet were published in Sweden.

Hjärtvärmare - Heart warmer

It is exceptional that this technique so quickly was incorporated with the traditional peasant costume in Nås, since the traditional costumes at that time already had a relatively strict form. The book is based on an inventory of traditional crocheted items from Nås done in 1993-1996. The crocheted shawls called "Hjärtvärmare" (translated that would be: heart-warmers) from Nås are famous. The inventory registered 41 of these shawls, most commonly red patterned in black and white.

This is a very interesting book about the Norwegian twined knitting tradition. Translated to English the title would be something like "Twined knitting - In search of a knitting tradition". I knew that twined knitting had a tradition in Norway. I had heard that they wore their mittens "inside-out" compared to us in Sweden. But that was about it. Information about Norwegian twined knitting has been very scarce.

Margit Bredesen, in cooperation with Magnhild Tallerås (textile advisor), has written a book (and knitted all the mittens in the book) that is thorough. History, techniques, similarities and differences between Norwegian and Swedish tradition, as well as a bunch of patterns (traditional and more modern) are to be found in this book.

Treasuring all the information this book has to offer I find it very inspiring to get a "new" angle on twined knitting. This is a book that has been long missing and a twined knitting tradition well worth a good book like this. I agree with the author that twined knitting is an old and interesting technique that is worth preserving, part of the cultural history of Norway and that this book shows the unique Norwegian tradition.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Autumn has come. A perfect time for sock knitting. In my yarn stash I found this yarn from Opal and decided to knit myself blue socks. This is a basic sock with an Old Norwegian Cast-On, that I think is called "dubbel korsuppläggning" in Swedish. A cuff with <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">a simple ribbing (knit 1, purl 1). When knitting the heel I added one strand of yarn and knitted it in twined knitting. This is an old way of making the heel stronger when knitting socks.
My mother has had a minor operation and just to cheer her up a bit I knitted her a pair of socks. The design is by Heléne Wallin and available as a free pattern for the members of "Sticka", a Swedish association for knitters.

I recommend this pattern. It is easy knitting and the result is a pair of nice socks.
I can't think of a better way to spend a grey, cloudy Saturday in September than visiting Millesgården to see the Josef Frank Exhibition. Josef Frank was an architect. But I think, that in Sweden, he is most known for his textiles. His patterns are now Swedish classics.
A day when the rain threatens to soak you if you dare go outside, these textiles are the perfect antidote. Joyful, positive and a bit mad in the nicest possible way.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I stumbled over this old issue of the Swedish knitting magazine "Stickat" from 1952. Since it is very worn the price was very reasonable. These old magazines are interesting to read. Even if the patterns often have to be recalculated and sometimes also "translated" into modern knitting descriptions, they can be very inspirational.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">This issue had a pattern for men's socks knitted with nylon yarn, Very "chic" in the 1950's, I guess. Well I don't fancy knitting socks with 100 % nylon yarn, but I thought it would be fun to knit these socks with a modern sock yarn.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I made some changes (e.g. I used another heel turn and I reinforced the heel flap) but otherwise pretty much followed the pattern. It is very time consuming and I must admit that we were given a large amount of fleece. I have washed the fleece in batches. The most time-consuming is the drying of the fleece. Since it has to be done outdoors we have been depending on the weather. Fortunately, this summer has been rather dry in our part of Sweden. I have rinsed the fleece in buckets to be able to reuse the rinsing water for our fruit trees and flower beds.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">We have recently spent four days in Vilnius, Lithuania. A very nice experience and one that I recommend. From a knitter´s perspective I had hoped for more (and easier to locate) local yarn shops and sellers of knitted items. But Vilnius is not Tallinn or Riga. Vilnius is a treasure-chest for lovers of amber, churches and other places for worship and history. The Old Town has a strong historical image and it is ideal for walks. Many nice views are to be found if you leave the most central streets and their very commercial focus. I recommend booking a hotel in the Old Town. <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">This is a long post! To facilitate for the reader I have made an index:
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">1. Yarn shops

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">We had read blogs and searched the Internet to find recommendations for yarn shops worth<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"> visiting. We arrived to Vilnius with a list and we planned our first walks so that we would check <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">out the shops in a fairly systematic order. It proved much harder, or at least less rewarding than we had anticipated. Many of the shops were nowhere to be found. Sometimes the name could be seen on a window but the business premise was empty or occupied by another trader. Here are some of the shops that we did visit.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Vilnos Namai, I think this is also called Casa Lana / House of wool. It is a bit confusing. Searching the internet to find out which is correct is even more confusing. The shop is situated next to the Kempinski Hotel, close to the Cathedral Square on Universiteto Gatve 16. We found this by pure chance when we were out walking, it had moved from its previous location, which was the <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">address we had from the Internet.

Casa Lana/ House of wool: Yarn

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The first thing that we saw when we entered was a BIG old wool drum carder just inside the door. The shop sells yarn and carded wool. They had yarn made in Lithuania and I bought some but not much, since I was a bit dubious regarding the quality. This was the first yarn shop that we visited and here we got very aware of the fact that you do not easily make your self understood in Vilnius if your language of choice is English. There is a big difference compared with Tallinn and Riga. BUT with a smile, a pen and some gesturing most questions and answers can be communicated. I also bought a book here. It was standing alone in the yarn shelf so I was not really sure if it was for sale at first.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Mezgimo Zona is situated on PYLIMO G. 38D/1 - 2, VILNIUS. We had to visit this shop twice on the same day since it did not open until 11.00 and we were out walking in the morning. It is well worth a visit. It was the only shop situated on the address that we had found on the Internet. It seems that shops move around a lot in Vilnius.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The first thing we saw when we entered was an entire wall of knitting books. I got really excited since I haven't got Lithuanian books on knitting. But I was promptly brought back to earth when my question if these books were for sale got the answer that they were not. They were just for the customers inspiration, still they were a very large and nice collection.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The shop has quite a lot of yarn but not a lot of Lithuanian yarn. There is a lot of sock yarn and knitting needles. I found double pointed needles from Knit Pro called <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Nova <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Cubics. They are cubics but made of brass instead of wood. I had not heard of these so I bought some (I have now tried them out and I like them a lot). I also bought some yarn. <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Two years ago we visited Grebbestad to attend a course on weaving on a warp weighted loom. This spring we heard that this summer was perhaps the last time that this course would be held, so we decided to go there once more. I wrote two rather detailed posts about our visit in 2014:
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">- Weaving Viking Style in Grebbestad - Opstadgogn
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">- A visit to Vitlycke museum and the fabulous rock-carvings (Petroglyphs) at Tanum

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Therefore this post will mostly show some photos from this years work. I had decided that I would not weave with my favourite colours, grey, brown, and blue. I would challenge myself and use red, pink, yellow and green. I also decided not to plan the pattern in advance but let it develop during weaving the band (the starting border) for the attachment of the warp. I also decided that I was not allowed to make the striping symmetric. I doubted my decision during the process but decided to go along no matter what. What happened was that I slowly got used to the result during the days of weaving, and I decided to keep the fabric and make use of it (more about that in a coming post).
